Gardening: Our Chicken Wire and Cardboard Raised Beds

Tall stakes were used to define the perimeter of the beds. Chicken wire was placed inside the stakes. Cardboard boxes were used to line the bottom and sides of the bed. Cardboard keeps grass and weeds from growing up through the beds. Trees in the yard had been trimmed and left to dry. Limbs were placed in the beds to provide large organic matter. This allows us to use less soil and helps the beds retain moisture. It is important to use dried material as opposed to fresh cut green material for gardening.

A think layer of course hardwood mulch was added and watered thoroughly.
A thick layer of nutrient rich compost and soil is added on top of the mulch and again watered in.
Finally, plants and seeds are planted and drip irrigation is added. All irrigation is on a timer making the garden low maintenance.
